The Houston Cinema Arts Society will host its 12th annual Cinema Arts Festival, both virtually and at drive-in theaters across Houston this November.

The festival's theme this year is Urbana — a tribute to Houston's legacy of intermingling Spanish and Black cultures and a nod to the global influence the cultures achieve.
'Houston is ground zero for Urbana,' said HCAS artistic director Jessica Green. The festival's theme is also a tribute to the 25th anniversary of the tragic murder of Houston musical icon Selena and the 20th anniversary of the untimely death of Houston rap producer DJ Screw.
'When we look at the global, cultural framework, especially when it comes to music,' said Green, 'you can trace so much back to these two artists.'
Although the HCAS hosted drive-in films before, this will be the first time they host them in conjunction with their annual film festival.
Partnering with venues like the Showboat Drive-In, Moonstruck Drive-In, and even the Houston Ballet Parking Lot, the emergence of drive-ins are a product of the COVID-19 era, and, 'are some of the preferred ways that festivals all over the world are exhibiting films in person, successfully,' said Green.
The festival will also have two free live streaming musical tributes for the public: one on Nov. 13 from Houston's iconic Screwed Up Records as a tribute DJ Screw, the other on Nov. 21 as DJ Gracie Chavez from the Bombón DJ Collective will perform a DJ set in ode to Selena.
'The point of Urbana is that Black and African culture in music, is everywhere from the beginning,' said Green. 'All these genres have African in it. It's something that's within all these cultures.'
Opening night, both virtually and at Moonstruck, will feature the Texas premiere of Mogul Mowgli — a film about a British Pakistani rapper played by the real-life rapper Riz Ahmed.

'It's a story about post-colonial identity, it's a story about Islamic identity, it's a story about cross-generational identity within immigrant families,' said Green. The film also uses, 'hip hop as this tool for self-expression to tell a story that is rooted in Black American history and creativity and the traveling of it.'

The next night, there is a virtual showing of the film Ema, about a dancer who balances reggaeton dancing and formal, contemporary dancing. Major lazer powerful ringtone. That night is also when the festival shows Shogun Assassin, the film that heavily inspired Wu-Tang Clan and Quinton Tarantino.
This will also be the first year the HCAS hosts their Borders/ No Borders short film competition that features both fictional and documentary films from Texas and from places that border Texas that, 'speak to the cultural intersection this region is so responsible for,' said Green.
Other films being shown this year include The 24th, New Order, Landfall, Eyimofe (This Is My Desire), and much more.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to view films submitted to the 2020 CineSpace Competition, the winners of which will be announced during the festival on November 14. CineSpace is a collaboration between NASA and the HCAS that offers filmmakers a chance to share their films that are inspired by and use actual NASA imagery.

Ending the festival on November 22, the HCAS will partner with the Houston Ballet to showcase their Closing Night Drive-In: Night of the Kings. The film, being shown in the Houston Ballet parking lot, 'speaks to the influence of global filmmaking,' said Green.
The film entirely takes place inside a prison, but is, 'entirely Shakespearian,' said Green. They are partnering with the Houston Ballet because the film uses dance to enhance the story in an 'incredibly formal way.'
